Hi! I’m Axel — a fun-loving, curious, and affectionate guy who’s just figuring out this whole “new home” thing. I’ve got a big personality and an even bigger heart, and I’m looking for a family who’ll give me love, structure, and lots of outdoor time (my favorite!).
I’m currently living with two young kids, a calm resident dog, and some barn cats. I get along great with the humans and my dog friend, but I am a bit too interested in the cats, so I’d do best in a cat-free home — or one where the cats are dog-savvy and I can be slowly introduced and managed.
Toys? Love ’em. People? Love ’em. Countertops? Also love ’em — I’m working on keeping my paws off the kitchen surfaces, but hey, a guy can dream! I’ve got a playful side and enjoy chewing on bones, tug toys, and stuffies (especially if I can rip them apart).
I’m housetrained, sleep in my own cozy area, and I’m learning things like “bed,” “leave it,” and “wait.” I’ve also improved a lot when it comes to vet visits and handling — I can be sensitive if I’m uncomfortable or unsure, but once I trust you, I’m pretty easygoing.
My ideal home would have a yard, people who enjoy spending time outside, and a calm environment where I can continue to build confidence. I’d love a family that appreciates my goofy charm, understands my quirks, and is willing to keep helping me learn.
If you’re looking for a loyal companion with a playful spark and a big ol’ heart, I’d love to meet you!
Axel was recently returned back to HART due to no fault of his own. Initially came in with some food sensitivities but has resolved since removing poultry from his diet. Axel is up to date on his standard antiparasitics and vaccinations (DACPP, Bordatella, Rabies). Axel is microchipped and neutered.
Axel does best when given time and space to adjust to new situations. In unfamiliar environments, he can become overstimulated and struggles to settle. His foster is helping him build self-regulation skills through strategies like offering breaks, using calming enrichment, and keeping routines predictable. He doesn’t always enjoy physical handling from strangers or when over-aroused, but with familiar people and gentle, respectful interactions, his tolerance is improving. Axel initially showed some resource guarding when stressed, but with management and a consistent routine, his foster has not seen ongoing issues. He’s currently living around barn cats but remains highly interested in them—he’ll do best in a cat-free home. Axel can be selective with other dogs and will benefit from slow introductions and ongoing support. Adopters who offer patience, structure, and positive reinforcement will help Axel continue to build confidence and thrive in his new home. |
